DigiPack Complete

I have now completed my digi pack, interior and exterior. I cam across some problems when it came to the interior images. I was originally going to use one red food colouring image and one green, although I really like the effect I used to the green image and couldn't make the red image exactly the same for the opposite side. I looked at other digi packs interiors and noticed that many are one landscape image so I didn't see why I couldn't mirror my edited image onto the opposite side. Below are the finished results.

Website 99% Finished

This is my website as a finished product; www.summerthor.webeden.co.uk

I have one small upload of my video to do onto my home page, I have the video link set up and ready although I am going to make a small change to my video and upload it when this is completed.

I have tried to incorporate the conventions of artists website I noticed when researching. For instance; having a 'Log In' page is a conventional way of ensuring the audience can connect with the artist and get 'insider' news and gossip. This makes the members feel exclusive and as if they are on a personal level to the star, aka Summer Thor.
I have also brought in some other media platforms being, youtube, facebook and a twitter box. These social networking sites and online video sites create a vast spread of advertisement and consumption for Summer Thors work.

I feel conventions like these along with others help make my website 'part of the group'. It fits in with the traditional artists sites yet has a quirky, characteristic touch that shines through with Summer Thors brand identity.

Deadlines

We have been reminded that the dealine for our coursework is now creeping up for a week tomorrow (friday 11th of May).
I have consturcted a list of things I have to do within the next week;
edit images for interior of digi pack
finish the 'gig' page on my website
http://www.summerthor.webeden.co.uk/

Write the evaluation

(if I have time I am also hoping to add another shot in the last minute of my music video to break up the shots)

Audience Opinions

I have gathered 6 members of my target audience to watch my music video and give me some feedback of some last minute edits I could do before submiting it with my coursework.
The majority of the audience said that the last minute of the video contains too many lip and face close ups. I have decided to break this up a little with some more shots of the field and running shots. I am going to add these shots after I have finished my digi pack and website.

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

I am having problems logging onto my site again today so I am going to finish my website on my home computer as soon as possible. I have decided to add another page to my website just to give it more depth and information. I am adding a 'Gigs' page to my website and adding all of 'Summer Thors' live events to the page, if possible I am going to put an option to buy tickets next to the date. Other than the website all I have to do now is edit the two images for the interior of my digi pack and complete my evaluation.

Merchandise

Above is one of the t shirts I have created for my merchandise. I chose to use the digi pack cover as I noticed many other atrists had as it promotes the new album and continues brand identity.

Progress on Website

I have now finished uploading the edited images onto my 'Gallery' page apart from one which will not upload at this moment in time for some reason. I will give this another go tomorrow and see if it works. I am now moving on to my 'Shop' page and looking at what type of merchandise I can create for the public to buy. I have researched artists merchandise pages http://flotique.florenceandthemachine.net/Store/DisplayFeatured.html    and found that t-shirts are the most common merchandise for sale, along with deluxe edition Cds'. Jewellery, mugs, tote bags and other items also crop up from time to time. I am going to see how many products I can create online with my images and hopefully put them onto my page as merchandise.

Photoshoot

Today I organised a time for Stacey to come to my house for some more photos that I could use for my websites gallery. I needed at least 5 more images for my gallery as at the moment it's looking a bit empty, I think I have got at least 8 images I could use I am now just going to edit them and make then look a bit more professional and interesting.

I put Stacey in the dress we used when filming the video for the shoot as it show continuity and can be tagged as a behind the scenes shoot. I also used a hat of my own for the shoot as it is unusual yet very on trend at the moment. I used a variation of backgrounds, using a white wall, landscape wallpaper and the field we used to film in. I am hoping this will add some umph to my images and give them an interesting, variety.

Florence and the Machine Gig

On March the 15th I went to see Florence and the Machine in her first UK Arena tour. As I have previously researched her brand identity and website etc I thought it would be appropriate to take pictures at the gig and show how her brand identity from her first and second album was continued to her tour. I took pitures of the set and noticed how the set was art deco style boards made to look like windows with lights shining through the back changing the colours now and then. Like on her official website the lighting changed through a number of pastel colours continuing the brand identity of her second album and website. I also noticed when Florence performed songs from her first album 'Lungs' the projection onto the art deco window board changed to the image of lungs featured on her first album, the lungs also pulsed as if they were breathing. This was also a continuation of brand identity throughout her albums and websites. Below are the images to show how the set and lighting changed throughout the gig.

The image below shows the lungs projected onto the windows, this is when Florence performed a song from her previous album 'Lungs'

Last Lesson

In my last lesson I added another post to my blog on my website writing about the gig that 'Summer Thor' had done the previous night. I am trying to keep updates going on 'Summers' gig to make it look like she is updating her website regularly and interacting with the fans, giving them a sense of closeness with the artist. I have now changed the link to facebook from a link saying 'Official Facebook Page' to just the facebook logo. I think this works a lot better as it is a very well known logo and will catch your eye immediately.

I now have to arrange a photo shoot with Stacey so I can add some more images to my gallery section of my website and also link in the track to the home page and also the video. I will be uploading the video as the very last thing I do out of all my coursework as I may make some changes right up to the deadline. I also have to finish the interior of my digi pack and try and get the two images to work together, if this doesnt work I will take another image and use the same editing effect for them, making it continuous and neat.

Artist Title

Today I have cut out the text I created on webeden for the font of my artists name and put it onto my digi pack. This will now be the font that is always used for Summer Thors name.

Text complete

I have now completed the text on the 'About' page. I took some inspiration from other sites when looking how to structure it and what information to contain. I am happy with the page so far although I may decide to change it at a later date knowing me but for now I shall leave it as it is. Below is a link the the page.

Changes to Website

I have decided to remove the link to the social networking sites off my home page as the only well known link was facebook. I am going to try and find a way to just connect a link to facebook without having to use the other networking links along side it.

I am now going to have a look at other websites 'About' pages and see what kind of information they include on there as I would like to get the majority of the content written then I can edit around it.

Background and Social Networking

I have figured out how to change text and add images to my website, so far I have changed the title to the artists name and added the same image that is featured on the back of my digi pack onto my site as the background. At a later date I am going to try and make the images just a border around the edges of my page leaving the center black. I think this will give a simple yet effective look.
I have just set up a Twitter Account for my artist, and embedded a HTML onto the home page of my website so I the tweets appear not just on the artists Twitter account but also on the artist website. This will broaden the ways in which fans can connect with 'SummerThor' and give them a sense of closeness knowing what she is up to throughout her days.
Below is a print screen of the link on my home page, you can also see the changed background. These are only the first things I have done on my website so it's still pretty bare.

I have now set up a url for my website

I am now in the process of playing around with templates and seeing what works.

WebEden

After facing problems with the school system when it came to the blocking of useful websites we have finally found one that will work on the school systems. We are having a tutorial lesson for the site on Friday the 2nd of March for which I will unfortunately be absent so I have decided to get on and have a look and play around on the site to see if I can get to grips with it. If not I will seek further help when Mrs Aldridge is free but I'm sure in time I'll pick it up. I will blog my progress with the site once I have had a look.

Crucial Parts

From looking at the two artists sites I have now gained an understanding of what main links are needed on an artists official website.
  • Home page
  • Gallery
  • News
  • Log in/sign up
  • About
A video link, youtube link and social networking links may also enhance the website.

Kate Bush Official Site

Kate Bush is also known for her extravagant style in many ways, therefor I am expecting her website to reflect this. The first link to Kate Bushs' official site is a video of an animation linked to Kate Bush with the option above to enter the site. Once on the main home page there is a record with the album title in the center and the page links around the inner circle. This is a simple image that may work with a similar object for my site. I could have a go at editing many objects and see which works best.

The links are; home, images, news, video, discography, shop. There is also a twitter, facebook and youtube link in the upper corner of the page with an option to log in or sign up. This will encourage fans to log in/sign up and feel exclusive, like they are "in on" something, also giving them a sense of closeness to the artist. Again, similar to Florence and the Machines site the house style stays the same throughout the site only the information alters from page to page. Overall the site is simple yet effective. Below is an example of the background that is used throughout the pages.

Florence and the Machine Official Site

Earlier on in my research into brand identity I looked at Florences' website, this was just before the release of her second album Ceremonials. Her website was then based around her first album release 'Lungs' continuing the brand identity of the lungs design overlayed onto her chest, and general eery house style.

The site then had a link to the 'Ceremonials' page which was an all black page with just the Ceremonials album cover and release date on. This was a great way to give fans and sneak peak into her new brand identity and advertise when the album was available for download and to buy.

Now the Ceremonials album is released Florences' site has had a brand identity overhaul. Throughout many of Florence's performances since the release of her second album tall windows have been a running theme, almost like church windows with white angelic lighting and dancers in soft floating dresses with contemporary choreography.

Whereas Florence has portrayed a very strong, yet still elegant woman in her performances. She seems to have replaced her old fancy, floaty ways to a more controlled, power on stage and I think this is all very cleverly linked in with the brand identity through her Ceremonials album and website. I have noticed that the Florence and the Machine title has stayed the same from the start as with the majority of artists, this gives the audience a sense of familiarity.

The brand identity from performances, personality, tracks and the album is all reflected on the official website. For instance the windows on the home page http://florenceandthemachine.net/ frame the page changing to pastel purples, green and yellow also changing images to coincide with the colours. This gives the page a sense of continuity throughout.

The home page also shows links to Florences recent events/appearances and a window showing the official video for her single 'No' as well as ten main links to other pages on the site. They are as follows; Home, news, blog, about, media, video, gallery, live, sign up, flotique and members.

I have had a look at each page and although the information and topic changes on each page the exterior design stays exactly the same. This is a simple yet effective way of continuing the House style throughout the website and could potentially be an idea for my website as I wont have to create an image for each page I will simply just have to create an interesting continuous brand identity to carry on throughout the pages.

Web Research

I have decided to do some research on musicians/bands official web pages, this will ensure that I know what the most important links are to include on the website, what most home pages look like, how they continue brand identity etc.
I have chosen to look at Florence and the Machines official website and also Kate Bushs'. I have chosen these two artists as Florence is very similar to my artist and both Kate and Florence have an eccentric style both through their music, style and brand identity.

To Do List

To do list;

Find a suitable font for my artist that suits her brand identity and house style
Use editing software to edit interior images making the second image the same as the first
Research the interiors of digi packs to find out what I could put in there other than images, what text etc

Pleased So Far

I have almost completed the exterior of my digi pack, all I have to do now is find a suitable font to use as my artists brand identity. I researched this in November and found it really hard to find a font that I thought suited "Summer Thor" but this will be my next task so I can get my digi pack complete. I am unable to upload an image of my progress so far but I will attempt again next lesson.

Decision for back image

I have decided to use the image of water for the back cover of my digi pack as it has a sense of continuity from the front cover. The two images of the bowl and food colouring will then also fit together nicely for the interior of my digi pack as they are the exact oppostire of each other.

Internet Proplems

As I can not access the site used to create the websites I will continue work on my digi pack. When I was previously having problems with the computer software in november I began drafts for my digi pack and also took images. This is all shown earlier on in my blog.

Video Update

I have finished my video but may decide to change some things about it after I have gathered some audience opinions. For now I am going to be focusing on getting my website done.

Happy With Progress

I am really happy with the progress that I have made over the past few days. I have filled quite a few gaps in my song with my new footage that I filmed last week so that has been successful!

All Footage is Captured

For this hour I have used the time to capture all the footage from my camera and transfer it to the computer. This has been a successful hour and I can now get on with putting the footage together. l

Filming

Filming last Thursday went really well and I think I have managed to get some interesting shots I can use to fill the rest of the gaps in my video. I made Stacey walk outside in bare foot and run around in the freezing cold in just a dress so we hurried the filming outside along to save her getting too cold! I also forgot to charge my camera before filming so I had to find an extension lead that would reach out of my window and into the field. Luckily I found one that was really long so I could keep the camera on charge whilst I filmed. This is something I would change if I need to do any filming for my video again as it was very inconvenient and took up some of mine and Stacey's time running around trying to find extension leads etc. Last lesson I put some of the footage onto the computer and managed to fill my first gap that needed filling. I now have to transfer the footage again as I didn't do it the most sufficient way last time and it has now gone off my computer, this is a bit irritating as it takes about 20 minutes to do, although I will ensure it will stay on my files for good after transferring it this time.

Adobe Premiere Pro Print Screens

As I have now run out of time when I am next working on my video I will upload print screens of my videos timeline to show my progress and the gaps that are still left to fill.

Also...

I have also added some two more effects to small parts of ny videos, one being ghosting, which I previously used as it has an eery, distirted feel to it and really suits the video type. I also added another fade just to smooth the transition out.

Making Good Progress

I have now got two sheets of notes and ideas with timings and lyrics to which I need to set movement to. Although I need daylight to film the outdoor scenes and Stacey can only do late Thursday evening so I will either change the filming day or ask if she can come and earlier. I have made good progress today and I'm pleased with the ideas I've got, fingers crossed this is the last bit of filming I'll need to do.

More Filming

I have come in to do my video in my free period as I was absent for fridays lesson. I am hoping to use this hour to get some story boarding done for the empty parts of my video so I know what I need to film. I have asked Stacey to come round on Thursday evening so we can do the filming. I am  hoping to get some shots that wont show her body sow e dont have to do the costume and make up again. Maybe some close ups of her hands, and scenery, slow motion shots etc.

Progress

I have now only got 1 minute 30 seconds to fill in my video. Within the next few weeks I'm going to decide what I need to re-film.

Productive Lesson

I have had a very productive lesson and added a really interesting effect to two of the clips. The effect is called "ghosting" and gives the clip a juttery look which really fits in with the lyrics at the time.

What's Left to Fill In

Progress

I have managed to get 20 seconds done on my video but the programme has just crashed so I am unable to carry on. Although I feel I have made some good progress today so I am not too concerned about the programme crashing.

Back After Christmas

So we are back after christmas and I am back editing my video. I am going to use each lesson for editing as the computer and the software is finally working for me.
I have decided to split a shot up and add a variation of shots into it for that verse and also to do some more filming as one section looks far too long and plain.
